Kitchen Tip = Winter Sweet Igloo and Penguin Craft

Craft time can be just as fun in the kitchen with this candy penguin and igloo project. See how to make a wintery scene with your kids using edible ingredients like marshmallows, frosting, sugar cubes, and coconut.

Sugar cube Igloo and Penguins Craft

The supplies you’ll need for this project are:

IGLOO

  • a paper plate
  • toothpicks
  • popsicle sticks
  • sugar cubes
  • pillsberry frosting, preferably white
  • aluminum foil
  • shredded coconut

PENGUINS

  • Small white gumdrops 4
  • Large white gumdrops 4
  • Orange jelly beans 5
  • Black licorice nibs 4
  • Red licorice strings, halved 2
  • Miniature marshmallows, for decoration

Create the Craft Base

First thing you want to do is create a base for your igloo and snowman. Coat the paper plate with the aluminum foil. Now we have a nice base for our igloo.

Build the Candy Igloo

You want to start the foundation for the igloo and it’s really up to you how big you would like your igloo to be. Take a popsicle stick and place a generous amount of frosting on your plate to create a foundation for your igloo. You want to concentrate on having the frosting mostly on the sides and you can push it out once you have it down. But you also want a little bit out in front of the circle just to have an entryway for your igloo.

Now you can start placing the cubes. You want to smoosh them down into the frosting so that the frosting comes up around the edges of each cube. After you place the first level of sugar cubes coat another layer of frosting on top, and then repeat the first step.

Remember to push down on the sugar cubes to get the frosting to come out through the cracks. Each layer you want to gradually move in towards the center so that then you get a rounded igloo, instead of a straight wall. Feel free to make the front entryway however you like it.

Build the Penguins

Secure small gumdrop with icing to top of large gumdrop to form head. Cut jelly beans in half lengthwise. Secure 2 jelly bean halves, cut-sides down, with icing to bottom of large gumdrop to make feet. Let stand until set.

Cut 2 jelly bean halves crosswise, for a total of 4 pieces. Secure 1 piece with icing to small gumdrop to form beak. Set remaining pieces aside for making more penguins. Cut each licorice nib lengthwise into 5 pieces. Use pieces to make 2 wings, a tail and eyes. Attach with icing. Tie 1 licorice string half around penguin’s neck to make a scarf. Repeat 3 times, for a total of 4 penguins.

Finish the Winter Craft Scene

There it is, now you’re ready for the snow.  Sprinkle the Coconut lightly . Now you have a sweet igloo which is a great project for any kid on a winter day.
